Record with the Flamio extension
Install the Flamio browser extension, record a test task, and see what the extension captures and keeps private.
Testers record their attempt at a Flamio Vision test task with the Flamio browser extension. You use the same extension to record a task's happy path. It records only while a recording runs, and it uploads the recording to the task when you click Finish.
It records the tab you are looking at
Install the extension
The extension runs in Chromium-based browsers: Chrome, Edge, Opera and others built on Chromium. It does not run in Firefox or Safari.
- Open the test task link. If the extension is missing, the page says "Flamio extension is required to run this test."
- Click Install extension and add Flamio from the Chrome Web Store.
- Come back to the task page and click Reload and check again. The page reads Extension detected.
When you add the extension, the browser asks you to let it read and change data on all websites. The extension needs that to record whichever site a task points to. It records nothing until you start a recording.
Record a task
Open the task link
Follow the task page. On Before we start, tick the consent box and click Let's go. The site to test opens.
Click Start
A Task card shows what to do. Click Start. The Flamio panel appears on the page, reading Recording, with a timer. Cancel closes the card without recording.
Do the task
Work through the task the way you normally would. Click Pause to stop for a moment and Resume to carry on.
Click Finish
Click Finish when you are done. The panel shows Uploading session... and then Thank you for recording. Keep the tab open until it does.
The recording appears in the task's Recordings table. See Watch tester recordings. You record a happy path the same way; see Create a test task.
The Flamio panel
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Pause / Resume | Stops the recording and starts it again. The panel reads Paused in between. |
| Finish | Ends the recording and uploads it to the task. |
| Report a bug (⚑) | Opens Report this session as buggy, which tells the Flamio team that something went wrong in this recording. Describe the problem in Title (optional) and Description (optional), then click Submit. |
| Minimize (⤢) and Hide (✕) | Fold the panel into a small tab at the edge of the page. The recording goes on. Point at the tab to see the timer, Pause and Finish, or click Open panel (⤡) to bring the panel back. |
| Drag handle (⠿) | Moves the panel out of your way. |
| Browser ID | Identifies the recordings made in this browser. Click Copy and include it when you contact Flamio about a recording. |
During a recording, the Flamio icon in the browser toolbar shows the same controls.
What the extension records
While a recording runs, the extension records the tab you are on:
- the page as you see it and every change to it, including frames inside the page;
- your clicks, scrolling and pointer movement;
- messages and errors in the page's console;
- network requests that fail, with their address but not the query string;
- how fast each page loads and responds;
- your browser, and the size of its window and screen.
It never records what you type: every form field is masked.
Keep parts of your site out of recordings
Add these to your site's HTML. They work the same way as in the web SDK.
| Markup | Effect |
|---|---|
class="flamio-mask" or data-flamio-mask | The element's text is replaced with asterisks. |
class="flamio-block" | The element and everything inside it is left out. |
class="flamio-ignore" on a field | Typing in that field is not recorded. |
data-flamio-redact-urls="full" on <body> | Failed requests keep only the host, without the path. |
The extension reads flamio-block only as a class. The data-flamio-block attribute works in the web SDK but not in the extension.
Troubleshooting
The task page turns the browser away
It says "Currently, our extension only supports Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera etc.)." Open the link in Chrome, Edge or Opera.
The task page does not find the extension
Check that Flamio is installed and turned on on your browser's extensions page, then click Reload and check again.
The toolbar icon shows an error
Click the Flamio icon in the toolbar. Under the error it says "Maybe refresh your current tab and try again." Refresh the tab and start again from the task link.
The recording stopped by itself
It says "Recording stopped: all tabs were closed. You can start a new recording." Closing every tab during a recording ends it, and that recording is not saved. Open the task link again and record a new attempt.
The upload failed
Click the Flamio icon in the toolbar to see the error. A recording whose upload failed is not saved. Check your connection and record again.
